Multi-factor authentication for Office 365 is available to all Normandale Community College students and employees for securing your access to our Outlook email, OneDrive file storage, Teams collaboration and phone, and productivity system. MFA is the best way to prevent someone who steals your StarID password from accessing your Office 365 account.
Below are the steps to start MFA setup to be completed on any web browser. A mobile device (iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet) is required for the setup procedure below. An app called “Microsoft Authenticator” needs to be installed as the first step.
Account
1. Please log in to your Email Account; Go to Normandale.edu
Click on the Login on the top right and select Email
- Students: StarID@go.minnstate.edu Faculty/Staff: StarID@minnstate.edu
- Password: StarID Password (same as eService and D2L Password)
2. Once signed in, you will be prompted to provide more security information to your account. Click Next.
The next screen will allow you to select your additional verification options.
3. By default, you may be prompted to setup with the Microsoft App. You can hit next to continue setting up MFA with the App OR
you can click on “I want to set up a different method” to select the phone number option (text and call). Please note, Microsoft Authenticator App is the RECOMMENDED way of configuring Multi-factor Authentication.
A mobile device (iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet) is required for the setup procedure below. You will need to have access to this device when logging into your account. An app called “Microsoft Authenticator” needs to be installed as the first step.

In this example, we will be selecting “I want to set up a different method”.
4. Select “I want to set up a different method”. You will see a drop-down menu of options. Please select Phone. For faculty and staff, it is recommended NOT to use office phone as this can create a loop due to need for authentication into the office phone.

5. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
6. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner.
7. Tap Add Account and choose Work or School Account.
8. Tap Scan a QR code.
- Allow the app to use the camera if asked for permission.
9. Hold the phone up to the computer screen to scan the QR code displayed.
10. Close the Microsoft Authenticator app.

11.Click Next.
- An approve/deny message will be sent to the mobile device configured above.

12. Tap Approve.

13. Under Step 3
- Select the correct country code for your phone from the 'Select your country or region' drop-down.
- Type in or verify the phone number to receive a phone call or text message as a backup in case the authenticator app is not functioning.

14. Click Done.
All future logins to Office 365 will now require Multi-Factor Authentication. You will need your mobile device any time you are asked to login to Office 365 services to approve the login.

If you see the Approve / Deny message on your mobile device, but were not logging in, click DENY.
If you lose your mobile device or change mobile devices, please contact the ITS Help Desk at (952) 358-8181 for instructions on how to regain access to your Office 365 account.
