Body
Dear Normandale students,
The era of Generative AI is here. Navigating AI can be challenging, and we want to make sure students understand Normandale’s approach to Generative AI in your classes.
In short, Generative AI is a powerful tool, but should not be used to replace original work.
Definitions:
-
‘Generative AI’ is a type of artificial intelligence that produces new content (text, images, video, etc.) based on large amounts of data. It's important to know that Generative AI can sometimes create biased, inaccurate, or fake content.
Normandale’s approach:
-
Each instructor determines whether Generative AI use is allowed, limited, or restricted in their course.
-
Any unauthorized use of Generative AI is considered Academic Dishonesty. You can learn more about Normandale’s Academic Integrity Policy here.
Next steps for you:
-
Refer to your instructor’s guidelines for the course.
-
If an instructor has not clearly shared their Generative AI policy in their syllabus, in their assignments, or in other coursework, talk with the instructor before using any Generative AI tool (Microsoft Copilot, Grammarly, etc.) for any coursework. This includes translation applications.
-
IF your instructor permits you to use Generative AI for any reason, review the facts listed below:
-
You are responsible for all content (ideas, facts, citations).
-
You are taking full responsibility for AI-generated materials as if you had produced them yourself: give credit for ideas, and make sure facts are correct. Ask your instructor for citation guidance.
-
There are some Generative AI tools in your Microsoft 365 account. The IT Helpdesk can help you log in, and the Tutoring and Writing Center can help you cite AI use.
Where to go for support?
-
If you are looking for writing support somewhere other than Generative AI, Normandale’s Writing Center provides free peer tutoring to Normandale students to support your writing process at any stage from idea generation to revision. Appointments are available both in-person in College Services 2190 and online via Zoom; walk-ins are dependent upon tutor availability.
A final word:
-
As Generative AI becomes more integrated into higher education, it's crucial to maintain the focus on human learning. While Generative AI can offer tools to enhance your educational experiences, it is your own creativity, critical thinking, and empathy that bring true depth and meaning to your learning journey.
Sincerely,
The Office of the Dean of Students
