D2L Grades - Automatic Zero for Missing Submissions

Summary

This article describes the details of a D2L update on July 18th, 2024, which allows instructors to set "Grades" to automatically assign a zero for missing submissions (past the "Due Date.")

Body

As of July 18th, 2024: New option in “Grades > Settings”

D2L has released a new optional setting in Grades called “Automatic Zero for Missing Submissions”

**DISCLAIMER**: We recommend that instructors carefully consider the effects of this new setting before deciding whether to use it.

  • For example, consider how it fits with grading practices regarding culturally responsive policies, grading-turnaround timelines, assignment deadlines, etc.

  • We also highly recommend that instructors communicate clearly with students who receive an automatic “0” for missing submissions, and clearly state whether late submissions are allowed, and if so, under what circumstances.

Overview of this new setting:

As of July 18th, 2024, D2L “Grades” can be set to automatically assign a “0” grade for missed submissions of specific types of D2L activities. *

Notes about this setting, if enabled:

  • *Auto-Zeros will affect Assignments, Quizzes, and LTI (external learning tool) items; Discussions are NOT included.

  • Auto-Zeros will only apply to the whole gradebook; they cannot be selected for individual assignments.

  • An Auto-Zero grade can easily be overridden if the instructor allows late submissions.

  • Instructors should carefully consider how this setting may affect their course’s submission deadlines, grace periods (if allowed), and the timing of grade-entry workflow.
