  • Videos for All is a comprehensive approach to using videos (and audio) media in courses to support teaching and learning.
  • The goal the Videos for All approach is to help in the decision making process of when & why to use videos, and how to find or create effective and digitally accessible videos.

Overall approach to course videos

Consider the whole "ecosystem" of video presence in your course.

Things to consider:

  1. How does the video support your teaching?
  2. How does the video support student learning?
  3. How does the video support "humanizing" your online environment?
  4. Refer to the infographic below for the types of videos to consider.

Infographic listing types of course videos—such as course tours, lectures, check-ins, quizzes, feedback, and personal videos—and showing two options for video creation: creating your own or using a pre‑made video, with a note to consider instructor presence when using pre‑made content.

FAQs about course videos:

Question 1. What is the recommended ratio of pre-made videos to videos I create myself?

Two-panel cartoon showing a comparison between educational videos: one screen displays an instructor presenting course content with simple graphics, while the other shows a highly polished, professional-style presentation on a computer screen.

Answer 1: It depends on your overall instructor presence in the course. Instructor presence describes how the students "know" you as the instructor.

Things to consider:

  • Instructor presence depends partially on the delivery method.
  • Asynchronous courses may have a higher need for instructor presence.
  • Consider all the ways in which instructor-to-student interaction is accomplished, even with the presence of pre-made videos.

tip

Refer to this tutorial on "Regular Substantive Interaction," which is a requirement of the Higher Learning Commission for asynchronous courses.

Question 2: If I create video lectures from a Synchronous online course, or an On-campus course, can I just share the lecture video with students?

Answer 2: Things to consider:

  • Do you have time to review & edit the captions?
    • If not, then consider either breaking it into shorter segments that are more manageable for reviewing and editing captions, or, consider other ways for students to get the same content.
    • Reach out to the Center for Teaching & Learning for help on how to edit captions or create shorter segments.

  • Could this video potentially be used for multiple semesters?
    • If yes, then consider reaching out for help with professional captions.

NOTE: This page is a work-in-progress and we will add more info here as our workflows for helping faculty with captioning is developed.
