Dependent vs. Independent Status for Financial Aid

For financial aid purposes, students are classified as dependent or independent based on specific criteria.

Dependent Students

A student is considered dependent if they:

• Are under 24 years of age

• Are not married

• Do not have children they support 50% or more

• Are not on active duty in the military and are not a veteran

Important Notes:

• Living on your own and paying your own bills does not automatically make you independent.

• Dependent students must include parent information on their FAFSA application.

Dependency Override

• Students who do not meet independent criteria but cannot provide parent information on the FAFSA should contact Student Services to request a Dependency Override.
