What is the difference between dropping and withdrawing?

Body

Dropping or Withdrawing from a Course

Students have two options if they need to remove a course from their schedule: dropping or withdrawing.

Dropping a Course (Free Drop Period)

  • Available through the fifth day of the semester for full-semester classes, or through the end of the first business day following the first class meeting for classes starting after the first week.

  • The class is removed from your academic record.

  • No tuition or fees are assessed.

Withdrawing from a Course (After Free Drop Period)

  • Begins the sixth day of the semester, or the second business day following the first class meeting for classes starting after the first week.

  • Students are charged tuition/fees for withdrawn courses.

  • A grade of ‘W’ is assigned.

    • ‘W’ grades do not count in your GPA but may impact your completion rate and academic progress.

  • See the catalog for the full Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.

Financial Aid Considerations

  • Adjustments to your schedule on or after the sixth day may affect your financial aid eligibility.

  • More information can be found in the catalog.
