Placement testing at Normandale Community College is a part of the Assessment for College Readiness policy of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system. Results of the Placement testing allow the College to identify changes in the academic readiness of each cohort of new entering students.
All new entering students at Normandale are required to participate in placement testing for Reading, Writing and Mathematics unless they received a waiver by submitting other assessment results or official transcripts of previous college coursework. Please allow 3 1/2 hours to complete all three placement tests.
Scheduling Placement Testing
Placement testing is currently available on a reservation basis only. Click on "Proceed to Signup page" at the bottom of this screen to schedule a reservation.
For Students Whose First Language is Not English
Lack of English skills will not be a barrier to admission or participation. We take appropriate measures to assess each student's ability to participate and benefit through placement testing and counseling. The placement tests will ensure more accurate placement in appropriate course levels and help to determine whether strengthening English language skills is necessary to maximize the student's academic success. Based on the results of the placement tests and counseling, students are then provided with campus services or a referral to community services to be better prepared for successful participation. Normandale offers an excellent program offered through the Department of English called English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to help students prepare for the many English language demands of their future academic career. The placement testing will place you into the correct level of our program-the level where you will be most successful.
Individuals with Disabilities
Accommodations for individuals with disabilities are available through the Office for Students with Disabilities by contacting Debbie Tillman at (952) 358-8625 or email OSD@normandale.edu to make arrangements.

It is very important to attend your scheduled session as all placement testing, student orientations and course registrations are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are attempting to reschedule a confirmed reservation for a date that has not yet occurred, the new reservation date you select will automatically delete and replace your original date.
Retaking the Placement Tests
Students who are dissatisfied with any of their placement test scores may retake them once per year in each regardles of where the test is administered. (This includes placement testing completed at any other MnSCU college or university.) There is a fee of $10 for retaking each section of the placement tests (reading, composition and mathematics).
