How to Prevent Side Angle Camera Recordings From Being Interrupted During a LockDown Browser Test

Issue Description

A user experiences an issue in which a mobile device serving as a side-angle camera causes Respondus LockDown Browser to lose connection to the side-angle camera recording during the proctored exam in the browser. It could be that the device serving as the side-angle camera loses connection to the Internet due to an unstable connection, a device notification such as a text message or phone call interrupts the recording, the device's orientation is changed during the exam, causing the recording to stop working, or the device's battery power runs out, causing the recording to stop.

Possible Causes

  • The device serving as the side angle camera is running on battery power alone and is running out of power before the proctored exam in LockDown Browser can be completed, causing the side angle camera view to be interrupted.
  • The device serving as the side angle camera has an unstable or poor Wi-Fi signal or coverage in the area where the exam is being taken, causing the side angle camera view to be interrupted.
  • The user hasn't enabled the "Do Not Disturb" mode on the device serving as the side angle camera and hasn't changed settings related to who or what can interrupt "Do Not Disturb" mode, causing "device notifications" such as text messages and phone calls to interrupt the recording.
  • The user hasn't locked the device's "Screen Orientation" setting of the device that is serving as the side angle camera before starting the exam, causing the rotation of the device to interrupt the recording.

Environment

Personal Devices: Equipment owned and maintained by individual users.

Resolution

To prevent the side angle view recording from being interrupted during a test taken in the Respondus Lockdown Browser, follow the steps below to check that the device serving as the side angle camera is set up correctly before starting your test.:

1. Connect the Device to its Charger

Before starting your exam, connect the device serving as the side angle camera to its provided charger to make sure that the device stays consistently powered during your entire exam to prevent the device from running out of battery, causing the recording to be interrupted.

2. Test the Internet Connection to the Device

Before starting your exam, test the Internet connection using the testing sites provided below to make sure the Wi-Fi connection to the device serving as the side angle camera is stable and strong.

If the results are poor, try moving your testing area with the device closer to your "Wi-Fi Router or Access Point" for a stronger connection and re-run the test to see if your connection improves. Also, if possible, try to connect the computer you are taking the test on to your internet using a cable or Ethernet connection to free up Wi-Fi bandwidth in Wi-Fi-dense areas such as apartment complexes.

Normandale recommends high-speed broadband connections with at least a download speed of 30Mbps (megabits per second) or faster and an upload speed of 20 Mbps (megabits per second) or faster with a latency or "ping" of less than 70 ms (Milliseconds) for the best performance.

3. Set up and Turn On Do Not Disturb on the Device

Before starting your exam setup, enable Do Not Disturb on the device serving as the side angle camera in Lockdown Browser:
