How To Setup an Access Password for a Proctored Test With Respondus LockDown Browser

Overview

This article covers how faculty at Normandale can set up an access password for students to enter before starting their exam in the Respondus Lockdown Browser. It will cover how to navigate to the Respondus Lockdown Browser settings tab from the "Quizzes" section in D2L.

Use case:

A student is not able to take the exam using the "Responus Monitor" camera settings, but you still want them to use Respondus Lockdown Browser without the camera monitoring feature, such as, in the Normandale Testing Center or some other live proctored environment.

Essentially there are two steps for this setup:

  1. Enter the password in your Respondus LockDown Browser settings and sharing that password with the specific students for whom this option is allowed.
  2. Select the option to allow the test to be taken in a live proctored environment.

How-To

To set up an access password for a Respondus Lockdown Browser proctored exam, follow these instructions below:

1. First, log in to D2L and select the course where the exam you want to set up a password for is located. In this example, we are using the "ITS Student Worker Training Modules" D2L course; yours will be different.

2. Then, from the D2L course's toolbar, select "Quizzes".

3. Then, look for the menu bar located just below the D2L course's toolbar. Once you have located it, select "LockDown Browser".

4. Once you are on the LockDown Browser screen with the blue padlock icon in the top left corner, locate the exam you want to add the access password to and select the black drop-down arrow (˅) in a gray box next to the exam.

5. Then, from the drop-down menu, select "Settings".

6. Once the exam's "Respondus LockDown Browser settings" menu appears, select the text box next to the "Password to access exam (optional)" and enter the desired password you want for the exam. This is the password you will share with students so that they can access and take your exam.

7. Then, scroll down and locate the "Advanced Settings" collapsed menu and select the black plus (+) button next to the text "Advanced Settings".

8. Once the Advanced Settings menu has been expanded, select the check box next to "Allow this exam to additionally be delivered in a proctored lab (no webcam or screen recording)" to enable this setting. This will allow students to take the exam in a "proctored lab" where live human proctoring is used in place of "Respondus Lockdown Browser's Proctoring".

8. Then, once everything looks good, scroll down and select the "Save + Close" button to finish setup.

Outcome

Students will now see the screen below from Respondus LockDown Browser, which asks for the "access password" you've just set before they are "allowed" to take your exam.
