FAQs for Faculty on the new D2L, Zoom, and Kaltura Login process
Overview:
The weekend of August 9th-10th began the transition from your regular "StarID" for signing in to Minnesota State software to using your full "StarID@minnstate.edu" to sign in.
- This means that after August 10th, signing in to D2L, Zoom, and Kaltura will be the same as signing in to Email, Teams, OneDrive, etc.
- You can read more about this new sign-in process in this article provided by Minnesota State.
FAQs for Faculty about the new Sign in transition:
Q: Why am I having trouble finding my Kaltura Media recordings?
A1: As of 8.14.25, Minn State is reporting that the integrations of Kaltura Media is moving more slowly than Minn State had hoped for. Refer to this article for more info on how you might be able to find your most recent recordings
A2: As of 8.20.25, Minn State informed us that Kaltura recordings should all be restored by 8.22. If you need access sooner, you can submit a Minn State request. The article linked in A1 above has the link to submit the request.
Q: What if I use a D2L "Non-StarID login," such as with a "fake student" account?
A: Nothing will change for Non-StarID Logins. That workflow will remain as it is today.
Q: What if I'm already signed in to my Email? Will I need to re-authenticate to sign in to D2L? And vice versa?
A: The expectation is that your new Microsoft sign in will create a seamless authentication across all of these Minnesota State and Microsoft tools when working on the same device/browser.
Q: What if I'm using a new device or a new classroom computer to sign in to D2L, such as, on the first day of class in my classroom?
A: Expect that you will be prompted for your "multi-factor authentication" (MFA) whenever using a new device to sign in to D2L (or Zoom, or Kaltura). This means you should bring your MFA device (most people use a smartphone) to class with you at all times. Note that if you create a "browser profile" that saves your authentication, this may cut down on needing to use MFA each time.
Q: What should I be telling my students about this change?
A1: Students will be taught about the change through various student communication channels at Normandale. However, it is a good idea to update any resources you currently provide with students about how to sign in to D2L, Zoom, or Kaltura.
- Starting August 4th, you will begin to see student communication posters, links, etc. Feel free to share those with your students.
- Find other resources on this Fall 2025 Tech Updates Toolkit webpage, which includes a new video of how to sign in to D2L and Microsoft 365.
- Feel free to share this Minnesota State article with students.
A2: If you require students to access D2L, Zoom, or Kaltura during your on-campus classes, remind them to bring their MFA device (ie - smartphone) to class. (Note: We hope to soon have multiple areas on campus where students can keep their devices charged between classes.)
A3: Refer students to the IT Service Desk if they have any questions or problems signing in.
Q: What if I am an employee who is also a student?
A: Refer to this Minnesota State article
