What is the difference between dropping and withdrawing?

Dropping a course or courses occurs only within the free drop period (through the fifth day of the semester for full-semester classes, or through the end of the first business day following the first class meeting for classes that start after the first week). The class is removed from the student's academic record, and no tuition and fees are assessed. Financial aid recipients: See additional information below.

Withdrawing from a course or courses is done after the free drop period has ended (beginning the sixth day of the semester, or the second business day following the first class meeting for classes that start after the first week). Students are charged tuition/fees for withdrawn courses and a grade of W' is assigned. While a 'W' grade does not count in a student's grade point average, it can have a negative impact on a student's completion rate and academic progress. Please see the catalog for the entire Satisfactory Academic Policy Statement which explains how course withdrawals can impact your academic progress.

You are encouraged to consult an advisor/counselor and the Student Services office before you drop or withdraw from courses.

Financial aid recipients:Adjustments you make to your schedule on or after the sixth day of the term may impact your aid eligibility. More information regarding financial aid can be found in our catalog.
